Rob Ford, AKA The Family Guy Sketch That Goes On Way Too Long Because They Think If It Goes On Long Enough It Will Become Funny Again But It Doesn't Made Flesh, is still running for office after this.

This guy boggles my mind. I mean, he uses CRACK. CRACK for gods sake. That will never get you laid. He's the first politician I've ever seen that does crack, not cocaine.

Also why do people keep re electing him??? I mean, he's great for entertainment value, sure, but my god....

Torontonian here. People don't keep re-electing him, unless you count people in Etobicoke. (I try not to count them.) He's only won an election for mayor once; it's just been a very eventful four years that feels much longer.

It's almost impossible to kick out a sitting mayor unless he's actually broken the law. Which, Ford has, but the police are corrupt and refuse to charge him; they didn't even really investigate any of the allegations until he decided to cut their (massive) budget.

In terms of why people continue to support him—it's complicated. One reason is that his brother goes to housing projects and hands out money. Another is that rich people (who are more likely to vote than poor people) don't care about anything as long as taxes don't go up. He's generally had the entire conservative propaganda machine behind him up until relatively recently, so people are quite brainwashed about what he's actually accomplished versus what he's claimed to accomplish.

I did not know that about the Mayor and how the position works in Canada. Wow. That's got to be both awesome and in cases like this, terrible. Also way bullshit that the police didn't do anything until he started cutting their budget. That's actually pretty scary.

Yeah, rich people seem to be like that everywhere, sadly. Here in the US, too - and since rich people are more likely to vote...*sigh* So right about that.

There's never been a mayor in my lifetime where it's been an issue! I mean, our mayor for the last two terms before that was this rather competent old Labour Party dude from the UK, with a completely uneventful personal life. The one before him had an eventful personal life—two illegitimate sons—but that seems like nothing in comparison. I don't think we've ever had a mayor blatantly flaunt the law while in office.

Someone here (Vancouver, not Toronto), has put up a popart poster of Rob Ford in virulent creamcicle orange and zombiebunny mauve, and he looks like Gert Frobe in Goldfinger.

And the answer to why he (and the current crop of bad bad people running Canada in general) keeps getting elected is:

Isn't that every Family Guy sketch? If you hear "Remember that time ..." it's pretty much a guarantee that you'll yearn for the sweet embrace of death before whatever comes next is mercifully interrupted by a Geico commercial.
