In the last month I've heard headlines in which scientists have announced: A) the global disasters caused by climate change have begun and it might be too late to limit the damage. B) drug resistant diseases are now a major threat and it might be too late to do anything. C) the reason it's too late is because the ruling class will never do what's needed.

In this context, I can understand Rob Ford a bit. Why the fuck not just do whatever the fuck you can get away with for as long as you can until you collapse? If the nightmare begins, will there be any gratification in having been sober, restrained and responsible during the good times?

Good point, and not a motivation I had considered.

One interesting thing about canvassing in Ford Nation (well, not Etobicoke Ford Nation, but Scarborough mostly voted for Ford too) is you get to see people's contradictions. Nearly everyone expressing support for Ford, or opposition to bike lanes and sensible transit, does so in terms of their own well-being. Responsible infrastructure, like LRTs, are a drain on "the little guy." Ford stands for the working class. It's not impossible to extrapolate an urge for short-term pleasure (I saved $60 on the vehicle registration tax!) in the face of utter shitastrophe.

I picture you having a tavern full of pirates stashed in a handbag, and you crawl in there in between tasks. The pirates don't realize they're being kept in a pocket universe, because there's plenty of grog and hijinks available. Occasionally one says, "Is it me, or is tx_cronopio the only one who ever leaves this tavern?" but then a fight breaks out and he gets hit on the head and forgets.

GG Allin ("the most spectacular degenerate in rock & roll history (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GG_Allin)") didn't even need the threat of global collapse as an excuse to become a trainwreck.

Ah GG, he was a walking NSFW warning. My college radio station actually tried to interview him during daytime hours, without a tape delay and without pre-screening the album he brought. It was like a digital glitch track before such things existed.

But if you break the bloody glass you won't hold up the weather.

(I wonder how many people still automatically get that barometric technology of the 1930s, without a footnote?)
